Lives Uncharted (“the Site”) is a non-profit and non-commercial project. Your privacy is extremely important to us. We collect only the necessary information that helps us ensure the Site’s functionality, improve the Site’s performance, and monitor our traffic.

What information we collect

When you visit the Site, we automatically collect certain information about your device, including information about your web browser, IP address, time zone, and some of the cookies that are installed on your device. Additionally, as you browse the Site, we collect information about the individual web pages that you view, what websites or search terms referred you to the Site, and information about how you interact with the Site. We refer to this automatically-collected information as “Device Information.”

When visitors leave comments on the Site we collect the data shown in the “Comments” form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. We refer to this information as “Contact Information.”

When visitors contact us using the “Contact us” form included in the Site, we collect the data shown in the “Contact us” form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. We refer to this information as “Contact Information.”

When we talk about “personal information” in this Privacy Policy, we are talking both about Device Information and Contact Information.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Cookies

A cookie is a file containing an identifier (a string of letters and numbers) that is sent by a web server to a web browser and is stored by the browser. The identifier is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. Cookies may be either “persistent” cookies or “session” cookies: a persistent cookie will be stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date; a session cookie, on the other hand, will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed. Cookies do not typically contain any information that personally identifies a user, but personal information that we store about you may be linked to the information stored in and obtained from cookies.

We use cookies for the following purposes:

(a)    authentication – we use cookies to identify you when you visit our website and as you navigate our website;

(b)    analysis – we use cookies to help us to analyze the use and performance of our website and services; and

(c)    cookie consent – we use cookies to store your preferences in relation to the use of cookies more generally.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Extracting location from images

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Embedded content from other websites

Content on the Site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

We use the WPForms Lite plugin to collect entries via the “Contact us” form included in the Site. Form entries are not stored in WPForms Lite. All content that visitors submit via the “Contact us” form is as well as any follow-up communication that results from contacting us are retained indefinitely. This is so we can document any communication between the Site and visitors, including potential Site contributors and Site contributors.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this Site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

For European Economic Area Residents

If you reside in a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), then under the GDPR and applicable data protection laws you have the rights, among other things, to access your personal data, have us erase it, and/or restrict its further processing.  If you wish to access or delete your personal data (if any) maintained by us, contact us at [email protected].

Note that your Device Information and Contact Information will be transferred outside of Europe, including to the United States.

If you believe that our processing of your personal information infringes data protection laws, you have a legal right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority responsible for data protection. You may do so in the EU member state of your residence, your place of work or the place of the alleged infringement.

For California Residents

The Site collects information that identifies, relates to, describes, is capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular consumer or household (“Personal Information”). 

California Customer Records Statute (CA Code 1798.80 – 1798.84) defines “personal information” as “any information that identifies, relates to, describes, or is capable of being associated with, a particular individual, including, but not limited to, his or her name, signature, social security number, physical characteristics or description, address, telephone number, passport number, driver’s license or state identification card number, insurance policy number, education, employment, employment history, bank account number, credit card number, debit card number, or any other financial information, medical information, or health insurance information. “Personal information” does not include publicly available information that is lawfully made available to the general public from federal, state, or local government records.”

If you leave a comment, we collect personal information associated with the comment and its metadata. If you contact us via the “Contact us” form included in the Site, we collect personal information associated with the content of the “Contact us” form and its metadata. If you contribute a story to the Site, we collect personal information included in the “Contribution Agreement Form.”

We do not collect any other personal information as defined by California Customer Records Statute. We do not sell any personal information collected by the Site.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Changes to the Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to our practices or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons. The most recent version of the Privacy Policy will always be posted on the Site, with the “Effective Date” posted at the top of the Policy.  If we make any material changes to our Privacy Policy or how we handle your personal information, or we are going to use any personal information in a manner that is materially different from that stated in our Privacy Policy at the time we collected such information, we will give you a reasonable opportunity to consent to the change. If you do not consent, your personal information will be used as agreed to under the terms of the privacy policy in effect at the time we obtained that information. By using our Site or services after the Effective Date, you are deemed to consent to our then-current privacy policy. We will use information previously obtained in accordance with the Privacy Policy in effect when the information was obtained from you.
